David Krut Projects was pleased to open Instruction on 14 May 2019 at 142A Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, Johannesburg. Instruction was the first solo project by João Renato Orecchia Zúñiga; a visual exploration of a playful and intuitive working process with sound and music. Orecchia finds ways of charting sonic movements and translations onto paper, developing a unique written musical language, which is incorporated into experimental music scores.
Instruction showcased Orecchia’s first series of etchings and woodcuts created in collaboration with the David Krut Workshop and Master Printer Jillian Ross. The body of prints is accompanied by static and interactive sound installations, videos and performances. The opening night saw Orecchia perform as the conductor of his experimental video scores to a group of guest musicians and past collaborators. Below are videos of the performances in the gallery space whereby the musicians responded to a video projection of Orecchia’s scores. The scores are always the same, however, the response and performance by the musicians may vary with each performance.
