When Jaco van Schalkwyk, dressed all in black, came to visit us with his set of lithographic ink drawings (everything but black), we were enveloped in blue, green and violet. David Krut Projects Cape Town will be showcasing his works from 17 September – 22 October 2016.
A lengthy conversation ensued about how Van Schalkwyk’s thinking and then ultimately his art is influenced by nature and the nature of things. Sunsets, fractals, guessing, decomposition, 3am, noise, and simply the way in which ink and colour behave – from C, M, Y and K to ultra-violet – all form layers on his surfaces.
As recently read in The Lake magazine, Van Schalkwyk feels strongly about “redefining how we define”. It is clear from our exchange of thoughts, ideas and essentially our experiences that he’s staying true to this: that he continues to make work that deforms and reforms.
We are looking forward to spring.
