Join David Krut Workshop Printer Chad Cordeiro in his home studio during lockdown as he provides an introduction to relief printing in a three-part video series.

Episode 1 – Linocut Printing

In the first episode of the DKW’s Relief Printing Series, Cordeiro provides an introduction to linocut carving and printing techniques. Cordeiro explains what a linocut is and how relief printing works.


Episode 2 – Wood grain

In the second instalment of the DKW Relief Printing Series Cordeiro elaborates on the first relief demo on linocut and progress into the realm of woodcuts. Cordeiro demonstrates the intricacies of woodgrain in relief printing, talks about constructing matrices from wood, demonstrates the differences between printing linocuts and woodcuts and reveals the beauty of woodgrain. Featuring works by Joao Orecchia.


Episode 3 – carving
Presented by Chad Cordeiro – edited by Sarah Judge

In the third episode: Linocut tools and carving techniques, Cordeiro goes through everything carving-related including different tools and techniques to implement in your relief printing process. Cordeiro explains how to make different marks, exploring carving techniques using linoleum, and demonstrates which tools are most effective. Featuring works by William Kentridge, Senzo Shabangu, Stephen Hobbs and Colbert Mashile.


Chad Cordeiro is a collaborative and editioning printer at the David Krut Workshop and works predominantly in linocut and relief printmaking techniques. He is a co-founder, printer, and artist at DGI print studio (Danger Gevaar Ingozi), an explorative, collaboration-based printmaking studio and project space run alongside artists Nathaniel Sheppard III and Sbongiseni Khulu.
