MAJA MALJEVIC
The David Krut Projects has welcomed back Maja Maljevic to the Workshop this month, August 2024. She is working with Printers Roxy Kaczmarek and Kim-Lee Loggenberg-Tim on a new body of work called Behind The Scenes, 2024.
In past collaborations with the David Krut Workshop (DKW) the complex assembly of different elements in each of the 120 works that make up Document for the People 2018 and Winter Files 2019 paved the path for the creation of the editioned 4 You Series, 2020 that were part of her solo show Based on a True Story, 2021. When working with Maljević, what emerges is a language peculiar to the artist of densely layered, confident and colourful components.
As was evident in these works the most recent body of unique prints on paper are evidence of a refined methodology and the dynamics of a nuanced relationship. These works encounter an exploration of figurative abstraction, in a wonderful dance mixing her recent abstract forms and earlier figurative shapes.
The prints start with Maja setting the scene using confident monotype brushtrokes, forming a stage or frame for the ‘characters’ to engage with.
In adding layers to these scenes Maja, was drawn to the velvety mark of drypoint. The artist uses a sharp tool to scratch directly into plexiglass and then the printers apply ink, removing the excess These feel similar in their language to the bold gestures of colour found in her paintings but as scaled-down versions. Sheets of paper are coloured to exact hues chosen by Maja, using flat monotype layers of oil-based inks. These, she cuts out shapes or uses to print drypoints over top. A large hardground etching plate features densely populated fine lines, weaving an array of imagery.
