Last Friday, the David Krut Workshop (DKW) in Maboneng had the pleasure of hosting Grade 7 art students from Kingsmead College, Rosebank. The workshop was a hands-on experience in linocut printing, where the students were guided through the process of carving and printing linoleum plates. This special event was part of DKW’s ongoing efforts to introduce young learners to the world of fine art and printmaking.
The session was led by two experienced facilitators, Sbongiseni and Jesse, who worked closely with the students, ensuring they learnt both the artistic technique and the intricate process of printing. Each student carved their own individual designs into linoleum plates, creating unique works of art. Once the carving was complete, the students combined their prints to form a large collaborative artwork, showcasing the power of teamwork and creativity.
A highlight for the students was viewing William Kentridge’s Triumphs and Laments woodblock prints, which are on display at the workshop. This gave them a chance to see professional printmaking at its finest, offering both inspiration and insight into the world of established artists.
The event was a great success, with 50 enthusiastic students and 3 teachers in attendance. It not only allowed the students to express their creativity but also gave them a tangible connection to the art-making process, from the initial concept to the final printed piece. Workshops like this not only cultivate artistic skills but also foster an appreciation for fine art, making them an invaluable experience for young learners.
David Krut Workshop continues to be a hub for artistic exploration, encouraging the next generation of artists through engaging and interactive learning experiences.
