This week the workshop team continued with the editioning process of William Kentridge’s latest print My Father is a Tree in a Forest of Fathers II.
In October 2023, David Krut Projects welcomed Master Printer Jillian Ross and Brendan Copestake from Jillian Ross Print (Saskatoon, Canada), to the Workshop for an exciting collaboration with William Kentridge.
During the first few weeks of Jill’s visit, William soon completed the first of the garden variations: My Father is a Tree in a Forest of Fathers I. The print is made up of a combination of 2 photogravure plates: a photographed collage made up of digital photographs and a photograph of a drawing.
Left video Sbongiseni pokes holes to register how to crop the print down.
The photogravure base layer is printed by Roxy Kaczmarek and left to dry for at least a week. After this the print is wet again and stapled to a large board. Roxy then collages a number of pre printed pieces – printed and torn down by Sbongiseni – to these stapled prints.
Once dry Sbongiseni crops these down and passes them back to Roxy to have another set of prints which are collaged with tape.
The image on the right shows the base print with pieces ready to be glued according to an acetate registration.
