Peter Cohen’s most recent event held at the David Krut Workshop in Arts on Main, Maboneng had a focus on exploring and highlighting the creative process that artists experience in our studio space. Cohen spoke alongside collaborating Master Printer Sbongiseni Khulu, discussing the process of channelling an artist’s practice, in Cohen’s case painting, drawing and sculpture, into the printing medium including but not limited to intaglio, lithography, cyanotype, relief and monotype. This conversation took place with a display of Peter’s most recent paintings, drawings and experimental multimedia works hanging alongside the exploratory prints that Cohen and Khulu had been working on intermittently throughout 2025.
The audience that attended were able to ask questions about Cohen’s art practice, his collaboration with Khulu through printing and how the two intersect in the workshop all whist maintaining a sustainable work-life balance. Cohen explained that most of his artistic endeavours take place in odd hours of the night. He then went on to share his interest in the works of the old masters in the arts, going as far as saying that his interest is likely due to formal training
Cohen’s recent paintings are in part an exercise in deconstruction and remodelling the works of Thomas Gainsborough through the functions of a case study focused on form, colour and pattern. Pattern plays a large part in how Cohen identifies his practice, stating that each layer is a composite of marks that result in a pattern. When coupled with other layers of marks the patterns are slowly made whole highlighting key features such as bitmap circles which function as shadow and contour and line mapping for denoting not only objects in space but also the subjects shape and form.
