Chine-collé Demonstration by Master Printer Jillian Ross on Deborah Bell’s ‘Breath, 2017’

In this video, Master Printer Jillian Ross from the David Krut Workshop demonstrated the process of preparing thin paper for chine-collé on the artwork Breath, 2017 by Deborah Bell. Members of the public had the opportunity to engage in this informative demonstration during the INVOCATIONS TO THE PLATE  Exhibition at 142 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood.

In this work, a dark horse with an empty saddle appears poised above a figure in repose. One of the horse’s hooves is hand-painted blue, resonating with the gold that appears across the background of the print. Both horse and figure float above an expansive landscape, which suggests a spiritual dimension rather than a physical one. Breath encourages the viewer to reflect on that moment of inhale and exhale, on space, or lack thereof, and on one’s presence.
