David Krut Podcast | In Conversation with Mikhael Subotzky and Phil Sanders | Listening Time 60 min

In 2017, David Krut Projects and the Goodman Gallery hosted an intimate talk between Mikhael Subotzky and Master Printer Phil Sanders. This conversation was moderated by associate professor and author Bronwyn Law Viljoen. The pair discuss their collaboration at the David Krut Workshop (DKW), Arts on Main, Maboneng, Johannesburg. Subotzky’s print series combines elements of his photographic work with drawing. Their process evolved from a desire to combine images physically, utilizing the techniques of photogravure, digital printing, chine collé and monotype.

Mikhael Subotzky’s works are the results of his fractured attempts to place himself in relation to the social, historical, and political narratives that surround him both at home in South Africa and on his frequent travels. Executed in a variety of mediums – from photographs to film and video installations, and more recently collages and drawings – these works have been widely exhibited and collected by institutions including The Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Modern in London. He has received, amongst others, the 2012 Standard Bank Young Artist Award, the 2012 Discovery Award at Arles, the 2009 Oskar Barnack Award, and the 2008 ICP Infinity Award. Previous monographs include Beaufort West (Chris Boot, 2008), Retinal Shift (Steidl, 2012) and Ponte City (Steidl, 2014), which won the 2015 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. His work was included on All the World’s Futures at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. Mikhael Subotzky was born in 1981 in Cape Town, South Africa and is currently based in Johannesburg.
