On the Practice of Paper: Bevan de Wet in Conversation with Alison Kane


In this episode of the David Krut Podcast, we take a break from Practitioners in Conversation to explore one of our latest exhibitions. Our bookstore manager Alison Kane sits down with artist Bevan de Wet to discuss his sculptural paper work that are featured in Surface Tension

Surface Tension  is on show at our gallery at the Blue House, 151 Jan Smuts Avenue Parkhurst from the 1st of February to until mid-March 2025. 

Bevan de Wet (b.1985) is an artist and printmakerbased in Johannesburg. He graduated with a BFA withdistinction from Rhodes University in 2008. From 2011-2016, de Wet worked at the Artist Proof Studio inJohannesburg as a professional print technician,collaborator, and academic facilitator.

In 2016 hefounded a print workshop called Eleven Editions, wherehe also collaborates with other artists and publishesvarious projects. De Wet regularly works with PhumaniArchive Mill, a paper-making research unit at theUniversity of Johannesburg, where he produces hishandmade paper work. He also teaches variousprintmaking modules at UJ.

De Wet works primarilywith paper; with a focus on etching, relief printing,papermaking, drawing and installation. De Wet has exhibited extensively, and his work is held ina number of private and public collections including TheWits Art Museum, Nirox Foundation, ABSA, Amazon,the South African Embassy in Washington DC, ArtBank Collection South Africa, MOAD Museum ofAfrican Design, Exxaro, and the Ahmanson Foundationin Los Angeles. De Wet’s awards include: the Ampersand FoundationFellowship (New York residency 2013); the ThamiMnyele Art on Paper award 2013; the ABSA L’AtelierMerit Award 2014 (Sylt Foundation residency,Germany); the ImpAct Award for Visual Art from theArts and Culture Trust 2014; and the Cill Rialaig ArtistsResidency in Ireland 2017.
