What Paper Should I Use?

This series stems from a body of work Sbongiseni Khulu made in efforts to interrogate the relationship between artists/printmakers and their working materials. Reason being, to what degree that relationship is interpreted or understood by others outside of the art spectrum. As such these works highlight frequently asked questions posed by artists/makers in search for the perfect resolution to their work. Whether it be asking “Are Your Hands Clean?” in service to protecting the material and postulating the viewers level of humanity. Or merely asking “What Paper Should I Use?” in order to better enhance the printed image and simultaneously pulling at the hierarchical associations between different types of paper and their users. These questions at their core possess a double meaning, and therein lie the common thread that ties together the perspective of both artist and layman.
