Chris Cozier is an artist who lives and works in Trinidad and New York. In October 2011 he visited South Africa to do a residency at the Substation (Gallery) at the Wits School of Arts. During this time Cozier was invited to make an edition at the David Krut Print Workshop at Arts on Main and created a series of 4 monotypes and 3 linocuts. Each image falls under the series title After All That Talk; After all that Talk I – IV for the monotypes and After all that Talk 1 – 3 for the editions. The works all feature an antiquated table cleaner. At first glance the object is completely foreign, bizarrely mistaken for what looks-like an old fashioned lamp with tassels hanging over a dust pan. The object, consisting of a small receptacle with a handle and a brush, is in fact called a table crumber or a silent butler and was used for collecting ashes and crumbs off of a table surface. After Cozier’s great aunt had recently passed away, he inherited the antique and has since been completely intrigued by the contraption.
