David Krut Projects is pleased to present True North, an exhibition of graphite drawings and the limited edition artist book of the same title, created by Maximillian Goldin, running from 15 August – 29 August.

The first glimmering of True North began in 2008, when Goldin spent some time with his grandmother, renowned painter and printmaker Alice Goldin, in her studio in Paris. From the initial sketches, the project blossomed into a fantasy world that occupied Goldin’s free time – and indeed his dreams – for the next few years. Goldin’s process in creating True North began with images; text emerged later as a way to complement the illustrations and help to articulate the narrative. A selection of the illustrations created between 2008 and 2014 have been compiled into a beautiful, linen-bound, hardcover book, produced in a limited edition and signed by the artist.

A story of self-discovery and new beginnings, True North follows Pik (part-seahorse, part-wolf) and Huf (part-owl, part-eagle), who leave their broken world in a beautiful swan-like ship. Voyaging through a storm of biblical proportions, they eventually arrive in a new utopian world – the inverse of their broken home, and perhaps a reminder of what it once was. Here they continue to follow the guidance of the creature called Swann, who leads them ultimately to a place of introspection, in which resolution of the different fragments of a personality suddenly seems possible.

The exhibition offers viewers a more in-depth look into the story of Pik and Huf, with drawings that are not included in the final book project, as well as unique insight into Goldin’s own journey of creative self-discovery. A delight for both adults and children of all ages, we are delighted to be presenting True North, the “artist’s cut”, for the first time.

Please join us for the opening of True North on Saturday 15 August 2015, 11am at the Montebello Design Centre, Newlands. A reading of the story will be performed, and Goldin will be available to answer any questions about the making of the story and the book, as well as to sign personal copies of the book.

The exhibition runs until 29 August.
