The Portuguese colonials fled Mozambique in 1975, bricking up their hearts to the liberated nation and blocking out the pain of separation from their beloved country. Frelimo offered a brave, new, Marxist future, but it was mired in the stupidities of social engineering and blighted by the darkness of civil war.
