Imprint: Selected Editions and Works on Paper

David Krut Projects is pleased to present IMPRINT, a selection of editions and works on paper by local and international artists, running from 10 December 2011 until 24 March 2012.

The definitions of the word “imprint” encapsulate the central tenets of the show. All works have in common the fact of their production through various printmaking techniques, which involve running paper through a press in order to create the imprint of an inked plate. The word can also refer to the details of the publisher, printed at the bottom of a work, which in this context draws attention to the chop (or blind stamp) used by publishers of editions to identify their work and the workshop in which it was produced.

From a metaphorical point of view, the word “imprint” can refer to a distinctive influence on thinking. Printmaking is, by nature, a collaborative exercise involving artist, printer and publisher, the impressions of each collaborator’s thought processes left as conceptual and technical traces in the final work. In a broader sense, as a result of being tethered to its time, every work of art created becomes an impression absorbed into collective memory. The same can be said for any exhibition of a group of artwork: combination creates a particular environment for the viewing of the work, the juxtapositions of and conversations between individual pieces opening up meaning that may be otherwise obscured.

The installation of works in IMPRINT is reminiscent of 19th century salon hangings, in which artwork is placed almost from floor to ceiling. The visual impact of this style of installation, true to another of the title’s definitions, imparts a vivid impression of complex interest.

IMPRINT includes work by Ryan Arenson, Frank Auerbach, Deborah Bell, Wilma Cruise, Christiaan Diedericks, Marlene Dumas, Jose Ferreira, Mischa Fritsch, Claire Gavronsky, Stephen Hobbs, Robert Hodgins, William Kentridge, David Koloane, Virginia Mackenny, Maja Maljevic, Colbert Mashile, Whitney Mcveigh, Andrzej Nowicki, Richard Penn, Robyn Penn, Paula Rego, Alexandra Ross, James Siena, Diane Victor, Mary Wafer, Jessica Webster and Alastair Whitton.
