DOLCEFARNIENTE  | Solo Project and Print Launch by Jacob van Schalkwyk

9 March – 1 April 2017

David Krut Projects | 142A Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood | Johannesburg

142A Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood is David Krut Projects’ (DKP) new Exhibition and Project space. DOLCEFARNIENTE, a Solo Project and Print Launch by Jacob van Schalkwyk, launches the space on the 9th of March 2017.

DOLCEFARNIENTE translates as “the enjoyment of idleness”, the sweetness (dolce) of doing (faro) nothing (niente). It is an Italian concept detailing a state of being, incorporated into the Afrikaans language around the time of the Batavian Republic (1803-1806), a short period of (comparatively) enlightened rule at the Cape broadly influenced by the French Revolution, particularly the thoughts and beliefs of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (“Man is born free yet he is everywhere in chains”).

Running concurrently with the inclusion of Van Schalkwyk’s work on paper in the group show entitled /ˈatməsˌfir/ at DKP New York, DOLCEFARNIENTE showcases his wider experimental practice, spanning a number of disciplines including performance, video, installation and sculpture, alongside new drawings and prints.
Opening Thursday March 9th at 6pm
