Strangelove

David Krut Projects is pleased to host an exhibition by the award-winning design label Strangelove. In this collaboration with David Krut Print Workshop, Strangelove has used some of their more conceptual pattern pieces to create a series of limited-edition prints. Printmaker Jillian Ross has turned the layered patterns into delicate works on paper, preserving their sculptural quality through embossing.

Also included in the show will be a collection of “armature garments”, several mannequins and other objects that reveal Strangelove’s interest in the intersection of art and fashion. A special series of limited-edition garments will be on sale during the exhibition.

Strangelove is also incorporating footwear from an innovative English design company TerraPlana. Originally conceptualised by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, TerraPlana has recently won the UK Observer’s Ethical Award for fashion. Strangelove and TerraPlana have a common design and work ethos, and although both the footwear and the garments are essentially functional objects, their incorporation in this exhibition will draw attention to their status as wearable art.

The exhibition follows on the heels of Strangelove’s Sanlam South African Fashion Week show on 1 September. This means that audiences who enjoyed seeing the collection on the ramp will get a closer look at the ideas and concepts underlying the clothing.

Carlo Gibson and Ziemek Pater are the designers behind the Strangelove label. They joined forces six years ago, focusing initially on street wear before moving into more formal wear. Their studio is located on 6th St in Parkhurst.

Outside of their work in fashion, Strangelove is involved in a number of creative endeavours, from the making of furniture to the creation of multi-media and interdisciplinary performance-based works. These projects have been presented in Europe, the USA and South Africa at venues such as the Dance Factory, Newtown and the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

This exhibition will open on Thursday 6 September at 18:00 for 18:30 at David Krut Projects, 142 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood.
