This series was produced by Mashile in collaboration with David Krut Publishing for The First Chapter Series – this comprises limited edition reprints of the first chapters of Booker prize-winning novels, signed and dated by the authors (where possible). Each volume in the series will include a luxury edition in an elegant slipcase with an artwork commissioned for the book. Proceeds from sales of the books will go to organisations working to combat HIV/Aids. Mashile created a work for J.M. Coetzee`s Life and Times of Michael K. His interpretation of Coetzee`s text conveys the alienation and sorrow expressed in the work and the result is a powerful conversation between visual and literary texts. Eight of Mashile`s linocuts created in preparation for this commission in a series is entitled “The Man and the Walk.”
