Zeno Writing – 9 photogravures on 1 sheet

Zeno Writing 9 on 1

Zeno Writing is one of a series of works relating to Italo Svevo’s novel entitled Confessions of Zeno (1923). David Krut introduced photogravure printmaking to Kentridge by bringing Randy Heminghous from New York to create these images that started life as part of the stage design for a chamber opera based on the novel. For the opera, Kentridge used shadow puppets made out of torn paper, about 15cm high, operated in front of a camera and projected live onto a larger screen at a height of three metres. The projections were then photographed, returning the puppets to more or less their ‘real’ scale, and then, from these photographs, photogravure plates were made.

For more information about this project, see Kate McCrickard’s interview with William Kentridge in A Universal Archive: WIlliam Kentridge as Printmaker – available at the David Krut Bookstore.
