Zwelethu Mthethwa was born in Durban and lives in Cape Town, South Africa. He received a Fulbright award and studied at the Rochester Institute. Mthethwa was first recognised in the 1980s when he began to photograph the start of informal squatter camps around Cape Town. The pastels and paintings he completed early in his career were also well recognised.
In more recent years Mthethwa has worked a great deal in large format photography and his photographic works have been included in major exhibitions in major international galleries.
He has had solo exhibitions at commercial galleries in South Africa, Europe and New York. Methethwa’s photographic work is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery and David Krut has published his editions since 1996.
