PRESS RELEASE

Kate McCrickard – Open the Box

Art First, London – 26 March to 17 May 2014

Art First Projects is delighted to present Kate McCrickard‘s first exhibition in London, only a year after her New York debut with Kid at David Krut Projects. In 2012 Tate published her well received book on the prints and drawings of William Kentridge and it is interesting that McCrickard, herself an accomplished writer as well as an artist, chose as one of her subjects an artist who is also a seasoned printmaker, and who also considers the medium to be integral to the rest of his work.

A sense of plat and a rich, spontaneously worked surfaces infuse McCrickard’s own works in every medium. Family life has become her principal subject, but while she is familiar with Joan Eardley’s landmark drawings of Glasgow slum children in the 1940’s, she remains mindful of the rich tradition which surrounds her in Paris with work by Bonnard, Vuillard, Degas readily to hand, she steers her own course, concentrating on an intimate scale, where truth to form and a lively spark of humour instantly hold our attention.
